how may i serve you?

since i was 15 years old I have worked in the catering business. I'm good at it, i like it, but it is some of the hardest physical work i have ever done. I like that you can say yes when you want, and no when you want, and you don't have a set schedule. I also don't like that you don't have a set schedule because you never know how much work you will or will not have. Most of the time, i like the people. I have been working with a certain catering company a lot the past 2 years and I have met some really great people! Some of them I even call my friends. The thing about catering i dislike, well HATE, the most is the lack of tips! Personally I think it is a sign of disrespect. First, it is a sign of disrespect if the sales rep doesn't remind the client that tips are not included. Second, it is a sign of disrespect if the client doesn't tip. Most people don't get a catering company to cater something simple like their Sunday family dinner at home. Usually it is a big event in someones life..a wedding, a company dinner, a baby shower, a wedding shower, a funeral, a fundraiser, etc. You can have the best food in the world, but if you don't have the people running around making your party flow, keeping the food hot and on the table, setting up, tearing down, cleaning up, washing dishes, running around all night without a break, without eating, well, your party will stink! And lets think about all the people you DO tip... hair stylist, waitress, bar tender, taxi driver, bell hop, bus driver, pizza delivery guy, and many more. So why would you not tip people who are working just as hard (in my opinion even harder) on some of the most important days of your life for an event you always want to remember? Shame on your if you do not tip your caterers! And shame on the service reps if they do not bring it to the clients attention. Everyone HAS to work together! If the sales rep and owners of the company want a good reputation and a good party, they HAVE to take care of the servers! Then, in return, the servers will go out of their way to make the party and the guests have the absolute best party they can have. I have seen it first hand. So the next time you hire a catering company and spend lots of money on food, be sure to remember and thank (with a tip) the people who actually did the most work and the hardest work making your party a night to remember!
